An included audio control unit lets you personalize every aspect of sound, including a convenient toggle between the Razer Tiamat 7.1 and any external speakers you may have.
The Razer Tiamat 7.1 is an analog headset and do not require software drivers of any kind. The USB plug is solely used to power the control assembly. It is highly recommended to use it with a 7.1 surround sound card. You can use a 5.1 sound card or a non-surround sound card, but the headset will only function according to the sound card’s limitations.
Note: Since the Razer Tiamat 7.1 uses five analog 3.5mm jacks, you will need an extra equipment such as an external USB 7.1 channel audio adapter to use it with a laptop. Although newer motherboards may support 7.1 audio and will have the ports necessary to plug the jacks in, you can use a PCIe 7.1 surround sound card to get the maximum audio experience.
Below is a list of some popular sound cards that have been tested with the Razer Tiamat 7.1 and their known limitations:
- Asus Essence STX II 7.1 - 3.5mm to RCA jack converter cables required.
- Asus Strix RAID DLX - Able to fully utilize all audio jacks on the Razer Tiamat 7.1.
- Asus Xonar DSX - Able to fully utilize all audio jacks on the Razer Tiamat 7.1.
- Asus Xonar DG Headphone Amp & PCI 5.1 - Features 5.1 channel surround sound. Side surround channels (gray jack) not supported.
- Creative Sound Blaster ZX - Features 5.1 channel surround sound. Side surround channels (gray jack) not supported.
- Creative Sound Blaster ZXR - Features 5.1 channel surround sound. Side surround channels (gray jack) not supported.
To set up your Razer Tiamat 7.1 headset:
- Connect the Razer Tiamat 7.1 audio control unit to your USB port with its included USB connector. With the Razer Tiamat 7.1, the Razer LED logo on the ear cups and the audio connector will light up. On the Razer Tiamat 7.1 V2, the drivers themselves will begin to glow.
- Connect the 3.5mm jacks to their respective ports. The jacks and their ports are color-coded for easy setup. You can refer to the diagram and instructional video below. The jacks and their color designations are as follows:
- Black – Rear surround
- Gray – Side surround
- Orange – Center/Subwoofer
- Green – Front stereo speakers
- Pink – Microphone
You can view the video below for instructions.
- Once connected, test if the audio drivers are working. Consult your sound card's manual to learn how to set custom audio preferences and take full advantage of the 7.1 surround audio.
Stereo Setup
For a single audio output and a single mic setup, you will only need to plug in the cables highlighted below.
Make sure that you have "7.1" disabled on the Tiamat controller for this setup.
Note: Ensure that you have "7.1" enabled on the Tiamat audio controller when listening to 7.1 audio sources, and disabled when listening to stereo sources.
Once you have successfully hooked up the Razer Tiamat 7.1 audio jacks, you will have to configure the audio settings on your sound card's software to set your audio preferences and ensure the best possible surround sound experience.
Optional External Speaker Setup
If you have an external set of speakers, you may connect its pins directly to the Razer Tiamat 7.1 audio control unit. For 7.1 surround speaker systems, connect the pins the same as the diagram below.
For stereo speakers, you will only need to connect a single audio jack.
The middle button on the audio control unit will allow you to toggle audio output between the Razer Tiamat 7.1 headset and your external speaker system.
